The building, because of its peculiar struc-ture, is called The Old Ship. It has a centralbelfry, which, in addition to holding the bell, servedas a lookout station. The bell rope dangles down tothe floor in the centre aisle of the Minots Ledge Lighthouse Eight miles southeast of the entrance to BostonHarbor is the most famous of New Englands light-houses. It is a mile and a half from land, on MinotsLedge, a position of great peril to incoming vesselswhen a northerly gale is blowing. The rock on which On the Massachusetts Coast 103 i*: stands is thirty feet broad. Only for a short time atlow tide does the top of the rock come into view. Thefirst Hghthouse on the ledge was a dwelling supported ata height of fifty-five feet on nine solid iron shafts thatwere ten inches in diameter. This stood only two the early spring of 1851, during one of the heaviestgales known on the coast, great quantities of ice ad-hered to the supports, and it was completely keeper and his two assistants lost their lives. The present structure is a tapering round tower ofdovetailed granite blocks that are made still moresecure by being bound together with heavy wrought-iron pins.
