Mahabalipuram lies on the Coromandel Coast which faces the Bay of Bengal. It has various historic monuments built largely during the reigns of Narasimhavarman and his successor Rajasimhavarman (Pallava dynasty -between the 7th and the 9th century), and has been classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984. Varaha Cave Temple is a small monolithic rock-cut temple with a mandapam dating from the 7th century. Inside the side walls have large sculptured panels depicting Vishnu as Varaha, the boar, holding up Bhudevi, the earth goddess, good examples of naturalistic Pallava art.
