Oil prospecting technique. Artwork showing the technique of seismic reflection profiling being used to find an underground oil deposit (black) trapped in an anticline. In the main block artwork, a pair of trucks on the surface are generating and detecting seismic waves. The truck at left (grey) is vibrating to generate vibrations in the ground, while the truck at right (yellow) is detecting the reflections of these vibrations in an array of sensors between them. This allows a profile to be built up (pink, upper left) of the ground below, including the rock layers and any oil deposits. Oil wells (two shown) can be drilled to bring the oil to the surface.
