He began working as a farm hand nearthe Cream City, but later removed to WalworthCounty, where he pursued the same line of to get into something more congenial tohis tastes, he entered upon the study of law in theottice of James Merrill, of East Troy, WalworthCounty, and was admitted to the Bar in 1877. Heat once opened an ollice in Builiiigton, RacineCounty, and entered upon the ])ractice of his pro-fession. Mr. INIerton was successful from the startand soon built up a large and lucrative GEORGE W. WILLIAMS.
