Sign posts to the historic pre 1937 Route 66 passing when it passed through Santa Fe New Mexico USA. In 1937 the route was changed bypassing Santa Fe. It came about when Governor Hannett lost in his bid for re-election. He blamed the politicians in Santa Fe and he vowed to get even with them. His solution was to build a new road to Albuquerque and bypass the state capital altogether. He was ruthless in his plan and its completion and time was against him. However luck was on his side and by the time the new governor was instated the road was finished and in use. Santa Fe was bypassed and 90 miles had been clipped from the journey between Santa Roa and Albuquerque. The new Route 66 was formally designated in 1938 and Santa Fe ahd lost.
