It was on the4th of March, r84i, that Mr. Van Buren retired fromthe presidency. From his fine estate at Lindenwaldhe still exerted a powerful influence upon the politicsof the country. From this time until his death, onthe 24th of July, 1862, at the age of eighty years, heresided at Lindenwald, a gentleman of leisure, ofculture and of wealth; enjoying in a healthy oldage, probably far more happiness than he had beforeexperienced amid the stormy scenes of his active ^ J^)9e^ylA^ NINTH PRESIDENT.
