In the recesses on the left side the family sleep, the floor generallybeing occupied bv guests. These houses have neither wmdows nor chimneys. GETTING INTO MOAB 9 The ride across the plains of the Jordan waslong and tiresome. The heat was terrific, andthe Moab mountains seemed never to comenearer. But they at last were reached, and theascent commenced. Slowly and calmly thosecamels went about their difficult task — up anddown places that seemed impossible for anyanimal to venture, along the edges of deepravines, over rocks with surfaces worn smoothand slippery by much traffic and exposure tostorms and winds, and at last out on to theextensive and fertile plains of Moab, at thatseason of the year dry and cracked after theheat of the long summer.
