See p. 99 supra. - The Mediterranean was often spoken of by the Romans as their sea, marenostrum. Hence, when the word sea was used by itself, this would be the meaningattached to the word by them. ^ The higher third of the Danube indeed belonged to the Western division ; butits whole lower stream to the CHAP.
