Cyclopedia of applied electricity : a general reference work on direct-current generators and motors, storage batteries, electrochemistry, welding, electric wiring, meters, electric lighting, electric railways, power stations, switchboards, power transmission, alternating-current machinery, telegraphy, etc. . Fig. 37. Diagram of Armature Winding 128 ELECTRIC RAILWAYS 33. the three coils in one slot are treated as if they occupied sep-arate slots in the diagram. In Fig. 37 the path of the winding can befollowed thus: A coil is in the top of slot 1 andin the bottom of slot 4; another in the top of 2and bottom of 5, etc. One terminal of the firstcoil goes to commutator bar 10, the other to 4;the terminals of the second coil to 11 and 5; andthus around the core until the connections arecomplete. This is a wave-w4nding and, when connected in this way andwith the brushes placed as shown, there are two parallel pathsthrough the winding from brush to brush. Each path is throughthe field under all four poles so that any possible inequality of thefields does not affect the counter-electromotive force and hence thedistribution of the current in the armature.
