South Hallsands showing the Ruins of the Village lost to the sea in 1917 Disaster, Devon, England, United Kingdom

In the 1890’s a scheme to expand the naval dockyard at Keyham near Plymouth began. The aggregate required for the building work was provided by dredging the beach near Hallsands in Devon. This caused the level of the beach to steadily drop until the coastline was threatened. In 1900 part of the sea wall was washed away, and following petitions from residents the dredging was stopped. It was however too late, as the beach structure had been permanently undermined. On 26th January 1917 strong easterly winds combined with a very high tide breached the village's defences and within months all but one house was destroyed.
