Schwartzkopffstraße U-Bahn Underground railway station entrance in Chausseestraße, Mitte, Berlin Serves the U6 line The station was built by Grenander/Fehse/Jennen in 1923. The walls are plaster and the columns are painted steel – the simple design was necessitated by financial restrictions at the time. The station was renamed Walter-Ulbricht-Stadion after the nearby stadium nearby in 1951. The station was closed due to the building of the Berlin Wall in 1961 and it became a "ghost station" as trains then passed through the station without stopping. In 1973 the station, although still closed, was renamed Stadion der Weltjugend to reflect the change in name of the nearby stadium. At this time East German guards patrolled the platform and the station entrances were walled and equipped with observation points, and a locked access door. Rolls of barbed wire prevented people from crawling onto the tracks. The barricades were removed in 1990 and the station was reopened on 1 July 1990.
