Secretary Dirk Kempthorne leading press conference, at Main Interior, on release of Geological Survey (USGS) assessment estimating the existence of trilion cubic feet of undiscovered, technically recoverable gas from natural gas hydrates on the Alaska North Slope. Secretary Kempthorne, joined by USGS Director Mark Myers, indicated that the USGS assessment was the first-ever resource estimate of technically recoverable natural gas hydrates, which are naturally occurring, ice-like solids in which water molecules trap natural gas molecules in a cage-like structure known as a clathrate.
