Farthest north; being the record of a voyage of exploration of the ship "Fram" 1893-96, and of a fifteen months' sleigh journey by DrNansen and LieutJohansen . nels were formed right through the old pressure-ridgeto port, and close up to the side of the vessel, so that it ap-peared for a time as if the Fram would soon slip down into thewater. For the time being, however, she remained in her oldberth, but frequently veered round to different points of thecompass during all these disturbances in the ice. The greathummock, which constantly increased • its distance from thevessel, also drifted very irregularly, so that it was at one timeabeam, at another right ahead. On July 27th there was a disturbance in the ice such as wehad not experienced since we got fast. Wide lanes were formedin every direction, and the floe upon which the smiths forgewas placed danced round in an incessant whirl, making us fearwe might lose the whole apparatus at any moment. Scott-Hansenand Bentzen, who were just about to have a sail in the freshbreeze, undertook to transport the forge and all its belongings tothe floe on which we were lying. They took two men to help.
