Britannia Bridge Memorial which records the deaths of workers and their families who died during the bridge construction, Anglesey, North Wales


Detail of the south western side of the Britannia Bridge Memorial, in St Mary's churchyard Llanfair Pwllgwyngyll. The obelisk was built as a memorial to the construction workers and their families who lived close to the site of Britannia Bridge: slate inscriptions record 18 members of this community who lost their lives during its building 1846-50 through accidents, disease etc. including little Emma Greave, aged 5. Also the workers who died during the bridge reconstruction of 1972-3. It was raised by voluntary subscription. The dedication on this slate panel records William Brook of Dewsbury, Yorks., principal accountant who died aged 27 of typhus fever. Also Isaac Garforth of Mirfield, Yorks., brickmaker who died. aged 62.
