Several years ago there were rumors of important alluvialgold deposits on the Upper Yukon. The head-waters ofthe river were discovered by the Hudson Bay Company, in1840. A government exploration of the region on behalfof the United States was made by Dr. W. H. Dall andFrederick Whymper, who wintered on the Upper Yukon in1865. The first prospecting party went over the ChilkootPass in 1880, and since then miners have gone by that routein increasing numbers. In 1886 there were numerous partiesattracted to the Yukon diggings, but the results were notvery encouraging. William C. Greenfield, who completed 18. 20 THE GOLD FIELDS OF THE KLONDIKE the account of the Yukon River District for the UnitedStates census of 1890, reported : Alining cannot be calleda success on the Yukon, up to the present time. Since thefirst excitement in 1886, there have been but few instancesof individuals taking more than $2,000 for two or threeseasons work. Years ago the Hudson Bay Company established, abouteight miles northwest of the mouth of the Klondike, a trad-ing post which was called Fort Reliance, since exact location is latitude 64 ° 13, longitude 1380 50, orfifty statute miles east of the boundary line of 141 °. Aboutforty miles northwest, down the river, is the mouth ofForty-Mile Creek, where Fort Cudahy is located, and about240 miles further down the Yukon is Circle City.
