Strawbridge & Clothier's quarterly . I can fly better myself Then there is the beautiful black-breastedGame, also a good broiler; whose meat isas fine-flavored as that of the are passably-fair layers; althoughyou can only keep a few hens, for it isnecessary to keep a rooster for everyhen, if you wish to avoid family quarrelsamong these high-spirited gentry. When I had to remove a hen from onenest to another, I did it at night ratherthan in the daytime; so that she wouldbe more likely to stick to her new warm weather I made the nest on theground. I found that sprinkling flour of sulphurover and around a sitting hen, kept herfree from vermin. I also ruffled herfeathers and back, and dusted her thor-oughly. I once greased a hen while she wassitting, and she punished me for so doingby not giving me one chick. A hen should not stay off from hereggs longer than fifteen minutes in coldweather; but an hour or two will not hurtthe eggs when the weather is warm. When a hen has been sitting eight or ten Fig. days, go to her at night with a strong light, and examine the eggs, and remove theinferior ones. These can be easily told byholding in the right hand, small end down-wards, between the thumb and forefinger;then place the little finger of the left handacross the top or middle of the large endof the ≫ close the left hand slightly insuch a way as to shade the eyes, and throwthe light into the egg; holding the egg alittle below rather than on a line with theblaze of the lamp. The eggs having chicksin them will appear quite dark, asmall portion near the top. Those that areinferior will be quite clear, like new-laideggs, and should be removed at once, asthey generate gases, which often causethem to burst, and sometimes spoil a wholenest. With Leghorns and Spanish eggsthe diflference can be seen much soonerthan with the eggs of Brahmas or Cochins,as the eggs of the two latter are thickerand darker. An expert can detect theinferior eggs as early
