Scales. Body covered with ctenoid scales ; uppermost and lowermost scales on base of caudal fin (Fig. 3) elongate, with very long lateral ctenii, greatly diminishing to usual size over focal apex of scale. Predorsal and postorbital regions (anterior to line between upper pectoral and first dorsal fin origins), opercle, and cheek naked; breast with 4-5 rows of scale in longitudinal series in posterior part, with enlarged median scale between origins of pelvic fins. 28-30 (24-32) scales in lateral series, 8 (7-8) in transverse series (from anterior end of second dorsal fin to anal fin). Vertebrae 28, including urostyle. Coloration. Body, including breast and abdomen, completely pigmented to ventral midline with more or less thick reticulate pattern; preserved examples light to dark brown. Head densely pigmented, cheeks mottled, with dark lateral preorbitai markings to upper jaw and angle of mouth. Dorsal and anal fins dark in both sexes.
