Chicharos o Guisantes. ©rbfett. Culture.—A week may be gained in earliness by sowing a quantity in moist sand, placed in a box in the cellar, and planting outside when well sprouted. Light, dry soil, not over-rich, suits the Pea. Sow as early as the ground can be worked, and again every ten days for succession, up to the first of June, after which there is danger from mildew. Sow in single or double rows, from four to six feet apart, according to the different heights, about an inch apart in the rows (except such sorts as we note to sow thin), and four inches deep. In this climate the O'Rourke Peas, if planted from the 10th to the last of August, will produce a fair crop for fall picking, when Peas will be most acceptable. Hoe often, and keep the ground clean and fine. The tall sorts can be made to bear more freely by pinching-in. The dwarf varieties may be grown in beds like Bush Beans, with rows about the same distance apart. The holes which are sometimes found in Peas are caused by the Pea Weevil (Bruchus pisi). This insect is a native of this country, but, as usual with such pests,has spread rapidly, and is now found nearly all over the world. The beetles lay their eggs on the young pods, and the larvae, as soon as hatched, make their way through the pods into the nearest Peas. They do not, as is scjmetimes supposed, de- stroy the germ, for Peas will grow if they are infested, but the. plant is likely to be more feeble, and for this reason will not produce as large a crop as if free from the weevil.
