A JCB tries to clear a way through massive snow drifts blocking the Kirkstone Pass road above Ambleside in the Lake District, UK during the extreme weather event of late March 2013. Counter intuitively, this severe cold weather is a direct consequence of climate change. As the Arctic sea ice melts, it alters the high pressure systems that normally dominate the Arctic in winter, pushing much colder air further south. Recent research has revealed that colder winters across much of Eurasia are now far more likely as a consequence of climate change.
