Illustration of the Hungarian-Austrian physicist Ferenc Krausz (born 1962). Krausz led the research team that in 2001 generated the first attosecond (one billionth of a billionth of a second) pulses of light, with the pulses each lasting 650 attoseconds. Such short pulses allow the behaviour of electrons in atoms and molecules to be studied. Krausz was awarded a share of the 2023 Nobel Prize in Physics, along with Anne L'Huillier and Pierre Agostini, for his work.
