Anemone hermit crab with fluorescent hairs carrying fluorescent sea anemones. At night these large crabs are commonly seen feeding on the corals and sand patches of the reef. To protect themselves from predators they attach anemones to their shells. The stings of the anemones are enough to deter most attacks. Blue light excites pigments within some underwater organisms, such as corals and anemones, causing them to emit a fluorescent glow. They may also harbour symbiotic algae which require light to photosynthesize and produce nutrients. This image is part of a series showing the identical specimen in white light and blue light.
