Tableau to accompany Professor Agassiz opening sketch on \The provinces of the animal world and their relationship to the types of man\". From Dr. Josiah C. Nott and George Gliddon's \"Types of Mankind\", Philadelphia: Lippincott, Grambo & Co. (1854). Nott and Gliddon supported polygenism - that the races are unrelated. this drawing is intended to support Agassiz's contention that the different biogeographical faunas each had their own species of primordially created man placed \"by the will of the Creator\" (page 1XXvi) rather than all men being descended from one ancestor and modified to their races therafter. He denied inter-fertility as a valid measure of a species, rather saying the only true species is a 'primordial organic form'. Agassiz later disagreed with Darwin's views on natural selection and evolution, as well as Darwin's views that all men were descended from the same ancestors."
