The Re-publicans have almost exactly two-thirds of themembership of the House, and by an agreementbetween Speaker Cannon and the Democraticleader the Republicans have two-thirds of theplaces on the important committees and theDemocrats one-third. Most of the committeeshave been slightly enlarged, in order to satisfythe demands for places. Although there aremore than eighty new members in the House,few of the old leaders are absent, and the chair-manships of the principal committees remainunchanged, with few exceptions. Thus, whenMr. Cannon became Speaker, Mr. Hemenway,of Indiana, took Mr. Cannons place as chair-man of the Committee on Appropriations. ButMr. Hemenway is now in the Senate, where he. occupies the seat made vacant by the elevationof Mr. Fairbanks to the Vice-Presidency. , of Minnesota, becomes chairman of thiCommittee on Appropriations.
