OF MARIA MARTEN. 41 The loss of his excellent partner, was a sad blowto old Marten, for he was much attached to her. Sheis represented as having been not only frugal and in-dustrious as an housewife, but as performing theparamount and important duty of inculcating moralprecepts into the minds of her infant children. Notbeing of an ambitious turn of mind, but contentedwith the station in which Providence had placed her,she, at the same time, set an example of connubialfelicity,which rendered her abode the Cottage ofContent. Upon this bereavement, Marias father took herfrom her place of servitude, and she became hislittle housekeeper, and upon her devolved, in agreat degree, at this early age, the cares of a mother;for, during her fathers absence, she had to tend andprovide for her younger brothers and sisters.
