The paddle steamers SS Sirius and the SS Great Western in New York harbour after their arrival following the first transatlantic crossing by steam power. The Sirius arrived first after an 18-day crossing from Queenstown on the 22 April 1838, with the Great Western arriving from Bristol on the 23rd April, making the crossing in 14 days. The Great Western was built and designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel specifically for the transatlantic service and was on her maiden voyage. The smaller 700 ton Sirius was a coastal steamer plying between Cork an London. The usual westerly crossing time by sail was 40 days.
