Square Piano 1800 Erard Freres et Co Paris and London Sebastian Erard was an instrument maker from Strasbourg who specialized in in building harps and pianos. He established his first business before the age of 25 and built his first square piano in 1777. Fifteen years later, he moved his business to London, in order to avoid the French Revolution (he was endangered by his fame and for having built instruments for Marie Antoinette). He later reestablished himself in Paris, building pianos in the English style. The museum's square piano, built after his return to Paris, is very much in the English style with a rectangular mahogany case and with the English single description: Rectangular mahogany case with mahogany moldings and half-round brass borders, on four turned and fluted legs; nameboard veneered with light wood with ebony striping; brasscandle holders; compass FF-f3 (61 keys), ivory naturals with molded fronts, ebony accidentals, two pedals or knee levers (missing) operating dampers and lute stop (felt covered batten near nut); pierced and unpierced oblong tuning pins; English single action without escapement; overhead damper arms lifted by padded wires rising between strings; double-strung throughout; presently fourth to eleventh pairs wound with brass; twelfth to twentieth pairs of brass, remaining strings steel; gauge numbers written on wrestplank: (from treble) N3 N2 N1 N0 0 00 000 (lowest 11 notes unmarked, presumably originally used wound string)..
