Lafayette Avenue Church was organized in 1845 and erectedits first building on Lafayette Street in the heart of what is nowthe business section of the city. Its first pastor, under whom itenjoyed a most prosperous career, was the distinguished W. Heacock. He remained pastor for thirty-twoyears, until his death, May 6, 1877. His successors have beenRev. Henry M. Parsons, 1878-1879; Rev. Rufus S. Green, D, D.,1882-1890; Rev. William B. Wright, D. D., 1891-1900, and thepresent pastor. In 1896, the present edifice having been completed, the churchremoved from its early location and occupied its new home. Asthe city authorities re-named the Avenue, Lafayette, there washappily no change in the historic name of the church, exceptingthe substitution of Avenue for Street. The auditorium, which will seat 1200, needs no further descrip-tion, even for those who are not present at the Assembly, beyondwhat is indicated in the accompanying illustrations. Ground Plan.
