WHAT HAPPENED: GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE EARTHQUAKE OF DECEMBER 26, 2004 The 2004 Sumatra-Andaman earthquake was the largest event since the Good Friday Alaskan earthquake of March 27, 1964, and the second largest since modern seismographic recording began a hundred years ago, releasing as much strain energy as all the global earthquakes between 1976 and 1990 combined (Park et al., 2005a). The earthquake's epicenter located at °N, near the northern end of the island of Sumatra. The rupture began at 00:58:47 Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) on December 26, 2004 affecting a 100 km section of the plate boundary. After one minute, and for the next four minutes, the "unzipping" of the plate boundary accelerated to a rate of 3 km s ' to the.
