The Bahai House of Worship, located in the northern Chicago of suburb of Wilmette, sits along the shore of Lake Michigan and is open to visitors year round. Started in 1921, construction of the nine sided building was completed and dedicated in 1953, is one of nine in the world, and is the only Bahai Temple in North America. The building is constructed from concrete cast panels mixed with white quartz on a steel frame and features intricate designs representative of the world's major religions. The Bahai faith is an independent religion that recognizes other religious figures as part of a series of Divine Messengers that are part of the Manifestations of God. As such elements and symbols of Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Hindu, and Buddhist religions are present. Bahai teaches that God has revealed himself and his teaching throughout history and a common thread of universal brotherhood ties people of all religions together. Mirza Husayn-Ali (1817-1892), known as Baha'u'llah is the most recent Messenger of God.
