RMS Carpathia docked in New York. This Cunard Line ship rescued the survivors of the sinking of White Star Line's RMS Titanic, the largest ocean liner ever built at the time. Titanic was said to be unsinkable. However, during its maiden voyage it struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic on the night of 14 April 1912 and sank with the loss of 1517 lives. Some 710 people in lifeboats were rescued by the Carpathia and taken to New York, arriving on the evening of 18 April. The Carpathia docked at Cunard's Pier 54 (company name on gangway), departing on 20 April to resume its European cruise. This photograph is from the Bain News Service.
