A gradual but marked decrease in the number ofsubscribers made the Directors somewhat anxious aboutthe future of the hall, and after mature consideration theydecided to recommend its conversion into a free libraryand reading room under the Manchester Corporation,hoping that thereby its usefulness would be increased,and that it would prove a great boon to the district. Theproposal being favourably received by the Free Libraries. THE RUSHOLME BRANCH. 177 Committee, a special meeting of the members was heldon September 8th, 1891, and the following resolution waspassed :— That the Rusholme Public Hall and Library bedissolved on the 29th of September, 1891, andthat all necessary steps be taken for the disposaland settlement of the property of the Institution,its claims and liabilities, according to the rules ofthe said Institution applicable thereto; and,further, that upon the satisfaction of the debtsand liabilities of the said Institution, any propertywhatsoever which shall remain shall be given tothe Corporation of Manchester for the generaluse of the public. Negotiations for the transfer were at once begun, andin accordance with the terms of the aforesaid resolution,the Institution was closed on September 29th, structural alterations necessary to adapt thebuilding to the purposes required were
