Plasmonics. Conceptual computer artwork of plasmonics, a technique involving the manipulation of plasmons (quanta of electron density oscillations) in order to combine the advantages of optical and electronic data transfer. The plasmons are achieved by directing light waves at the interface between a metal and a dielectric (centre). The waves of free electrons produced at the interface are often at optical frequencies, and so would mean optical signals (encoding a lot of information) could be transmitted through minuscule nanoscale structures.
