Emperor Minghuang Teaching Yang Gueifei to Play the Flute, late 1400s-early 1500s. Minghuang, a prominent emperor of Tang (618-906) China and his consort, Yang Gueifei, have inspired many legends, paintings, and poetry in later Chinese culture. Through the study of Chinese literature and the collecting of Chinese paintings, tales of their lives and romance became well-known in Muromachi Japan.
