BARTHOLOHAEUS WELSER. (born 1484: DIED 1561.) FROM MEDAL IN CABINET OF THE GERMANISCHE NATIONALMUSEUM. NURNBERG. QERMRNY. Royal Grant to Ehinger 85 and carrying trade of tlie new world. About theyear 1526, Dalfinger, who, according to his instruc-tions, had investigated the probable value of the Em-perors grant to his principals, returned to Europe, and advised his superiors to accept the security. Patents were then issued by the crown, under dateof March 27, 1528, granting the right of possessionto Bartholoma and AntonWelser,^^^ their heirs and assigns, for the northern portion of South America, extending from Cabo dela Veta to Cabo de Mar-capa^ia^ bounded by SanMarta in the west, andParia in the east.^^ Heinrich Ehinger, ofUlm, merchant,^^^ knightof Santiago and ro3^alchamberlain, togetherwith Hieronymus Sailer,^*were named as theiragents.^°^ It is furtherstipulated by the kingthat the Welsers, through Heinrich Siger^^ and the. * Ambrose Dalfinger [Talfinger] in Spanish documents, MicerAmbrosio, also Micer Ambrosio Alfinger. There appears to be more orless uncertainty as to the identity of Ambrose Dalfinger, some author-ities in both Germany and Spain holding to the theory that AmbroseDalfinger was in reality an Ehinger. This theory is partly based uponthe Concession of March 27, 1528, which reads verbatim: Primera- 86 The Pennsylvania-German Society. above named Hieronymus Sailer ^^^ tlieir agents, should deliver, within a given period, not less than4000 negro slaves to the royal colonies in the WestIndies.^^ In return it was agreed that all communicationhenceforth with this part of the Indies, whether from Europe o r Africa, should be by vesselsowned or controlledby the Augsburgfirm of Welser andCompany.^^ Arrange-ment
