Ridge of Monte Tamaro. Looking East to Alpe Di Foppa

High-level hike from Monte Tamaro to Monte Lema – one of the most panoramic pre-Alpine hikes. From May to November, Monte Tamaro can be reached with the aerial cableway from Rivera on the route over the Ceneri Pass. A cosy hostel with restaurant and accommodation facilities is located on Alpe Foppa. Youngsters will find a children’s playground and a tiny lake lends the alp a special charm. The racy ride on the roller-sledge run is particularly popular with families, but the highlight on Alpe Foppa, apart from the landscape, is the Santa Maria degli Angeli Church, designed by Swiss star architect Mario Botta. Its contemporary, characteristic form in concrete with porphyry cladding is set like a fortress on a rocky spur, yet offers an invitation to meditate. A small panorama terrace is located on its roof. From Alpe Foppa at 1530 m, the trail leads up another 430 m to the Monte Tamaro summit (1962 m). On the way to the top you pass the Capanna Tamaro which has sleeping accommodation for another 60 persons. The ascent from Rivera to this hut presents a particular sporting challenge to mountain bikers. However, not many hikers tackle this route to the summit but instead take the high-level trail to Monte Lema (aerial cableway to/from Miglieglia). This well-known panoramic hike with fantastic views in all directions across Ticino lakes to the high Alps, leads across sunny green meadows and through wild chestnut and beech forests, passing typical old Ticino mountain villages with their stone roofs. This hike, which is equally attractive in either direction, has a shuttle service from the late afternoon, linking the valley stations of Miglieglia and Rivera so that with a round ticket you can easily return to your departure point.
