The battle had been a series of fierce attacks by both combat-ants, on the right, left, and center, attended in almost every instancewith temporary success, but met at last with a decided wooded nature of the country, which can hardly be appreciatedby one unfamiliar with the battle-field, was peculiarly favorable tothe massing of the enemys force in perfect concealment and secre-cy. The same difficulties in the ground also prevented theircolumnsfrom being checked with artillery ; besides, their perfectfamiliarity with the region, it having been in the neighborhood oftheir camping-ground for many months, gave them a decided ad-vantage in their strategic maneuvering.
