Reassembled planking and fragments of the Marausa ship, the wreck of a Roman merchant vessel of the late 3rd century - early 4th century AD found in 1999 off Marausa beach near Trapani, Sicily. At the time of shipwreck the vessel was loaded with amphorae, here shown littering the lower part of the deck. The ship with its well-preserved cargo and was around 27 metres long and 9 metres wide, making it the largest wreck from the period ever recovered from Italian waters. It was originally wrecked in the shallows while attempting to enter the Birgi river which was a navigable river in Roman times.
