By the samepowerful affinity, sulphuric acid decomposes water, and de-prives it of its oxygen, when in contact with water and certainmetals (iron, zinc, tin, magnesium), or part of the acid itself isdecomposed by the abstraction, of oxygen, with the forma- ACIDA. 105 tion of metallic oxides and of sulphates, when concentratedsulphuric acid acts upon some metals (copper, mercury, silver). A piece of pine-wood, dipped into concentrated sulphuricacid, will become black, and when a piece of loaf-sugar is placedin a little of the acid, in a test-tube, and gently heated, the acidwill become black, and emit the odor of sulphurous acid ; whenone drop of the acid is mixed with a test-tubeful of water, thiswill let fall a white precipitate upon the addition of a few dropsof barium chloride.
