The American Florist's Washington correspondent writes: "I observe that the seedsmen have here a man who purports to represent them and I suppose they are paying him for it. They had just as well call him off and save their money for adver- tisements in the trade papers. "The congressmen are all politicians and no matter what they think, letters and telegrams from their own districts have more effect than innumerable dele- gations of men who cannot defeat their election. "While, as I have stated, free seeds may yet be defeated, it is an undeniable fact that the whole tendency of legisla- tion in the present session of congress is for more paternalism and government control. This has been brought about by the astounding revelations brought out in the insurance, railway, and other investigations. "Briefly stated, while a few have long known it all intelligent people now know that they are being shamefully robbed, for that is just what it is. In their an- ger and resentment they are turning to the national government for relief. I know that many of them are doubtful about securing it here but they see no other place to apply. "I have gone into this at some length to try to acquaint you with the true sit- uation as viewed by an eye-witness. Everything that smacks of a combina- tion is now viewed with suspicion at the capitol. There are United States sena- tors who will not be seen in conversa- tion with a railroad official. It is there- fore not surprising that in the midst of all this clamor, pressure and suspicion the small (comparatively) matter of free seeds should receive scant atten- tion.' Erfurt Seed Crops.
