The wind was easterly and the weather fine, when they passed Gravesend, about half-past two in the afternoon, Folly being then well ahead, Alexandra next, Dudu perhaps 400 yards now gained fast at first; then Dudu took a start, and in the Lower Hope she passed Alexandra and ran up to Folly, which was perhaps carrying her big topsail too long, the wind being now fresh and raising a mild sea; whilst she was doing this, she was passed by Dudu, and in that order they continued until they rounded the steamer and turned to come back to Erith. The Alexandra, however, soon relieved her antagonists by running on the edge of the Blyth, where she stuck for about forty last, however, Folly got a chance, luffed across Dudu's bows, and fairly passed her. They flew up fast before wind and tide, having to jibe round all the points, and Dudu came up very near to Folly several times. The race was, however, won by Folly, though only a minute and five seconds ahead in passing the flag-buoy off Erith Pier'?. From "Illustrated London News", 1864.
