Nara plant Acanthosicyos horrida endemic to the Namib desert Namibia The nara limits water loss by reducing leaves to spines and photosynthesising through its stem the tips of which may be eaten by ostriches It produces a melon fruit once each year which is used by the Hottentots as food The nara has deep roots that extend to the water table when this drops the nara dies indicating a change in water supply thus acting as an indicator species
