Kidney filtration tube. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a section through a PVP (polyvinylpyrrolidone) tube that is part of a dialysis machine called a dialyser. Kidney dialysis, or haemodialysis, is required when the kidneys are unable to filter waste products from the blood. The patient's blood flows out of their body through a tube in the dialyser, which acts as an artificial kidney and removes waste products and excess fluid from the blood. This tube's fibrous structure aids the filtration process. The cleaned blood is then returned to the patient. Magnification: x1250 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
