In April, 1864, General Smith was assigned to the commandof a division in the Army of the James commanded by GeneralBenjamin F. Butler, whom he had investigated a year this assignment of General Smith I voltmteered to serveand was in the official orders named as Volunteer Captain imtilJune, 1864.
