Anaesthesia mask, circa 1910. This is a Low wire frame mask. The mask was placed over the patient's nose and mouth and a gauze or sponge was placed over the wire frame section of the mask. Liquid anaesthetic, such as ether or chloroform, was applied in drops or lightly poured onto the gauze so that the patient breathed in anaesthetic vapour as well as air.
