Officers of the Union Garrison, Fort Sumter, 1861


On April 13, Major Anderson surrendered Fort Sumter, evacuating the garrison on the following day. The bombardment of Fort Sumter was the opening engagement of the American Civil War. Though defeated they were all considered heroes by the soldiers and people of the Union. Top row left to right: Captain Truman Seymour, First Lieutenant George Snyder, First Lieutenant Jefferson C. Davis, Second Lieutenant Richard Meade and First Lieutenant Theodore Talbot. Bottom row left to right: Captain Abner Doubleday, Major Robert Anderson, Assistant Surgeon Samuel Crawford and Captain John Foster.
