Lake Kournas lies 4 km from Georgioupolis in a valley surrounded by hills in Chania Prefecture (West Crete). It is the only freshwater lake in Crete and in antiquity used to be called 'Koressia' after ancient 'Korion', a city thought to be in the area with a temple dedicated to Athena. The lake has a perimeter of km, is 1,087 m long, 880 m wide, and covers an area of 579,00 sq m. It is m at its deepest point and lies 20 m above sea level.
