This pavement is now apparently approved by prac-tically all citizens, even those who were originally theworst objectors. The pavements have not been downlong enough, however, for the city to form an accurateestimate as to how long they will last. There seems tobe little wear so far, though there has been a slightamount of shifting of the sand cushion and a minoramount of WOOD BLOCK PAVi;.\li;.\T IX UNION AVENUE. The first pavements were laid with transverse ex-pansion joints, but these appear not only unnecessarybut in fact detrimental and specifications, therefore, havesince then eliminated these joints, the blocks beinglaid continuously. We find that it is wise to lay theblocks fairly loose in the street. The joints are filledwith paving pitch to half their depth and the top halfwith fine dr> sand. Only one example of what could betermed buckling has occurred in all of the work thathas been done here. This was between the car tracks onS. Main st-eet, which showed buckling for somethingover a block. This work was laid tighter than was thepractice of the city in its portion of the work, in spite ofthe protests of the inspector on the work.
