Before the applause thatfollowed had entirely died away the names of his competitorswere withdrawn, and the Blind Preacher was nominatedby acclamation. The Hon. William M. Springer, of the same State, hadjust entered upon his twenty years of continuous service inthe House. He came promptly to the front as a readydebater and skilful parliamentarian.
