Iowa, there read law with lian-kin & Miller, the latter now a Justice of the Su-preme Court of the United States, and, in 1856,was admitted to the bar at Burlington. Associa-ted with George W. McCreary, afterward Secre-tary of War, he began the practice of law at Keo-kuk, and was there at the outbreak of the latewar. As cajitain of Company A. Colonel Bruce participated in thebattles of Prairie (Jrove, Ark., the seige of Vicks-burg, Yazoo City, Port Hudson, New Orleansatid Banks to Texas. From Browns-ville, Tex., his command returned to New Orleansin 18(14, and, as landsmen, took part in tiie attackon Fort Morgan. He was afterward engaged inthe battles around Mobile and at the surrender ofSpanish Fort. Being mustered out of the service in 18G5, atDavenport, Iowa, General Bruce returned to Keo-kuk, and, the following fall, came Soutli for thepurpos
