Battlefield Medicine, 16th Century

Surgery in the foreground of battle scene; the patient is slumped in the arms of a man as the surgeon extracts the arrow, instruments lie on the ground at his feet; two assistants stand nearby with trays of instruments; two men, wearing turbans, observe. In the absence of antiseptics and anesthetics, the accepted medical practice was for surgeons to complete their work as quickly as physically possible. Military surgeons were generally more experienced than their civilian counterparts, but post-operative infection often killed patients. 1573.
